Week 3 Thing 8 - Technology

As my children are aware, I am not technology savy. I have trouble when there is more than one remote connected to the TV and the various other things we have (Wii, DVD, Videorecorder.....). We do have a computer that has access to the internet; dial up access though (and it's not working right now) . I cannot operate a digital camera. We do have one; I am not allowed to touch it... I do not have a cell phone; my kids do.... I am not allowed to touch their phones either! I do not have an IPod; the rest of my family each has one......Do you see a pattern emerging here? At some point in time I will change this but life is interferring right now. Oh well.....

  1. The Technical Services Dept. Head at my first librarian job said I was cursed when it came to electronics. She figured I was emitting some low level radiation that made the OPACs malfunction. She couldn't impose a "no touchy" rule since I worked in Reference but she badly wanted to. :-)

  2. Finally, I have found you. A person other than myself who is mystified with the multiple-remote system for the TV. I remember, back in the eighties when I was growing up, we must have had the very first remote control. It was like a rectangular-shaped box with all of these buttons on it for each channel. There was a little switch on the side that you could flick up so that you could go to the higher- numbered channels. Oh, and the funniest part? It had a cord attaching it to the TV.

Now, oye, don't get me started. Our television has a remote for the television, a remote for the DVD player, a "universal remote" that's supposed to work for the TV and everything attached to it, but it doesn't really. There's a remote for the stereo system that's attached to the large speakers, which are attached to the TV. Seriously, when did watching TV become such an ordeal?

  3. Wow - I have found a kindred spirit!!! I thought I was the only low tech person around. I do have a cell phone but it is a pay as you go and only used for emergencies. Is there hope for us in the high tech future?

  4. I remember the day that I came home to find my housemate practically in tears. She had just spent 20 minutes trying to turn on the TV, but there were so many electronic gadgets attached to it, that she couldn't figure it out. One had to press about 4 different buttons (in the right order) just to watch a simple show. Who says technology makes our lives easier?
