Week 10 Thing 24 - Summarize

The "25 Things" was interesting. I enjoyed learning some of the things that my kids have talked about; learning to 'Blog', 'Twitter' and all about 'Podcasts' of which some were fun and some serious. I did not like Technorati, it was just too confusing for me. I have used Wikis before and I'm sure I will continue to so do. I do not know how much of 2.0 I will use but at least I know a little more about it and that is a first step.
At the beginning this seemed very overwhelming but by breaking it down into sections and most importantly taking the time to "play" I was able to complete everything and understand (most of!!) it. I will have to take some time later and go back and "play" a little more........

Thanks Elaine, I did enjoy it......

Week 10 Thing 23 - Netlibrary

I have taken a look through Netlibrary this morning. There was certainly a variety of titles from children's, young adult and adult. I saw a favourite author of my parents (Lisa Gardner's title "Alone") and several titles of author Christine Feehan that I read. There were titles for people interested in business and the classics were represented as well. Quite a well rounded selection.

Week 10 Thing 22 Podcasts

This was different. I took a look at Worthington Library's Summer Reading Club " Just Read It"

http://www2.worthingtonlibraries.org/programs2go/media/video/download.cfm?section_id=3&media_id=106

Quite appropriate for the time......catchy too!!

Week 10 Thing 21 YouTube

Took a look around YouTube today. It certainly has a lot of videos on a lot of different subjects. As my husband is so interested in genealogy I chose to watch the following link :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcqDqc0SXgo

It was an interesting tour of the library and all the related genealogical materials they have.
It was also interesting to view the Susan Boyle hit song and some of the other song dance hits that have appeared on TV lately.

Video tours of our archives may be of interest to others (Like my husband)......

Week 9 Thing 20 - PBWiki

This is certainly a very fun site for exchanging ideas, lists and comments. As stated it is a site for "Play". I enjoyed Rhonda's cat slide show and received a few good tips on restaurants to visit.

Week 9 Thing 19 - Wikis

I found this "thing" to be really interesting to read about. You can in effect go from something very general to very specific and this would certainly save time and effort especially when needing particular hard to find information and very current info or using it as a forum for communication. I have used Wikipedia before and found that it was an excellent site for information, although I would advise to double-check with another resource. I have issues with its open edit and would hope that people would not corrupt the information contained in it. I certainly like the idea of the exchange of information within our WPL site; it was interesting to read some of the articles about OLA 2009, the information it contained as well as the personal viewpoint of the seminars

Week 7 Thing 17 - Perspectives

As I began reading the perspectives, I found that they were all extremely interesting that is why I continued to read them all.
I certainly agree with the statement contained in "Into the World of Librarianship".... "allow staff time to play and learn"..... this is crucial as we need this to understand what is out there and how to use it.
I like the statement in "To better bibligoraphic service".... "collaborating on cataloguing"...for cataloguers like myself, this would save time, I'm all for it.
The statement in Wikipedia Library 2.0 does sum everything up well though...."individual pieces of Library 2.0 may not be entirely new........new Web 2.0 technology has led to a new generation of library services. In this I agree.

Library 2.0 as a whole can be overwhelming but if you can break it down into individual pieces and take the time to learn them.....it is our future.

Week Seven Thing 16 - Technorati

Technorati is a very busy site and even though user-friendly it was confusing to me. I am what my kids have described me.....Technology challenged. Oh well, I need a lot more time to figure out this one out but I certainly did find that it produced more hits than Google. I tried a few of the search options, boy, you need time to be able to view everything of interest. I don't think I like this one as much....too much information can scramble the wits and I need every wit I have left........

Week Seven Thing 15 - Delicious

After viewing the features of Delicious, I can see how this is an extremely user-friendly way to bookmark websites and use tags. As a cataloguer, sometimes LCSH hinders us in the way we can create headings for patron/staff use. This would not have the same effect as you can enter user-friendly terms (even slang) that patrons are more familiar with thereby making searches easier, faster and less time consuming. Staff may find that the time they take interpreting headings for patrons has been reduced and in turn the search time for items that staff have to help with will be reduced. Bonus......

Week 6 Thing 14 - Generators

That was fun. I created a Lego Lady. I won't use this again but it's cute.

Week 6 Thing 13 - LibraryThing

I really enjoyed LibraryThing and have posted a few books with more to add when I get time. This was easy to use. I entered books by title and by author.

Week 6 Thing 12

I have joined twitter. It was interesting to see who I could follow (includes TV guide, People, and a few actresses I have seem on TV over the last little while). I do not know if I will use this much but I can see that it would be interesting following the people you enjoy watching.

Week 5 Thing 11

After subscribing to Google Reader, I took a look at the Blogline Search tool. It looks simple to use and maybe I should have subscribed to that reader instead. Technorati and Syndic8.com looked very "busy" and intimidating; when I have more time maybe I'll look closer. I was very interested in the Internet Public Librarian's Library.....that one is a definite "second look" site.
Here's is to all the new stuff I'm learning..... I just have to remember it......

Week 5

I have set up Google Reader and have subscribed to two Blogs, two WPL bloggers and two library related sites. (with a little help from Anthony). Pulling all the information from the different sites to one reader is an excellent idea. I like the time it will save. I hope to go back and add a few more sites when I have the time. I did not know about this and so I found this interesting. I wonder if I now know something my kids don't .....(not likely.....)

Week 3 Thing 8 - Technology

As my children are aware, I am not technology savy. I have trouble when there is more than one remote connected to the TV and the various other things we have (Wii, DVD, Videorecorder.....). We do have a computer that has access to the internet; dial up access though (and it's not working right now) . I cannot operate a digital camera. We do have one; I am not allowed to touch it... I do not have a cell phone; my kids do.... I am not allowed to touch their phones either! I do not have an IPod; the rest of my family each has one......Do you see a pattern emerging here? At some point in time I will change this but life is interferring right now. Oh well.....

Week 3 Thing 7

Hey, I did it. See. I designed my own trading card with no help either. "I am patting myself on the back for this one" Can't you tell? The possibilities of this type of thing are endless and I could so lose track of time here

Week 3 Thing 6

As a teenager, my goal was to go on a trip to Australia with my girlfriend on our 21st birthdays. Never did get there but still want to go one day. The link below is for the image I chose to represent my trip of a lifetime.....one day....

Week 2 Thing 5 - Things I have learned

Well - I have learned how to create a Blog. I never thought I would do something like it; but I am glad I did. The 7 1/2 Habits tutorial was interesting as was Pickering Public Library's Smashup clip. The "Blogging" is going to take some practice but I did actually find out (just now) how to change the Blog's template as I had a little trouble in the beginning with that (and I did not like my first choice!). Now to figure out how to place this in the Tracking Log.......

7 1/2 Lifelong Learning Habits

After viewing the 7 1/2 Lifelong Learning Habits I have decided that the easiest habit for me is the fourth listing - Have confidence as a competent learner. I have, can and will continue to learn all of my life. Life and learning go hand in hand. The hardest habit will be, for me, the sixth listing - Using technolgy to advantage. It's not that I am afraid of it, it is just that I am unsure of some of the technology and need to practice with it. I do not have access to some of the "new things" out there. I do not have a cell phone, Ipod, MP3 player, Blackberry, etc. I have never used Blogs, Facebook, Twitter, etc. This is going to be an interesting experience and I am looking forward to it.....(I think).

New to Blogging

As I have never done this before, I am finding this as interesting as it is confusing. Hopefully with practice it will be easier to do and navigate. I am interested in finding out the why's and wherefore's of this new technology (new to me anyway) so that I understand what my kids talk about as well as co-workers. Well, here goes folks.
